Anti-oxidant
An antioxidant is a molecule capable of slowing or preventing the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals, which start chain reactions that damage cells. Antioxidants terminate these chain reactions by removing free radical intermediates, and inhibit other oxidation reactions by being oxidized themselves.


Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy uses essential oils from plants to heal, alleviate pain and regulate mood. Essential oils are a volatile, highly concentrated plant extracts, derived from leaves, bark, roots, seeds, resins and flowers.


Ayurveda
The ancient Hindu science of health and medicine. This holistic science is the knowledge of complete balance of the Body, Mind and Spirit, including the emotions and psychology, on all levels. It includes in its consideration, longevity, rejuvenation and self-realization therapies through herbs, diet, exercise, yoga, massage, aromas, and meditation.


Bioenergetics
The study of energy in life.


Bodywork
Various forms of touch therapies that may use manipulation, movement, and/or re-patterning to affect structural changes to the body. *Each of our massages are defined as bodywork.


Chemical peels
The removal of skin blemishes or wrinkles by applying a chemical, such as an acid, that removes the buildup of dead skin cells that can clog the pores causing acne, it also stimulates the production of collagen diminishing the appearance of wrinkles.


Cosmeceuticals
Cosmetic products made with natural ingredients, such as vitamins, phytochemicals, enzymes, antioxidants, and essential oils, which can produce results similar to some pharmaceuticals.


Detox
The removal of toxic substances from the body. These toxic substances often accumulate in the body from the foods we eat, our lifestyle, and our environment.

Ecologically acceptable; not harmful to or threatening the environment.

Envelopment
The act of wrapping an individual in a warm environment.


Exfoliate
To remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin.


Facial
A facial is given by a licensed esthetician with special training in skin care. A facial cleans, exfoliates and nourishes the skin to promote clear, well-hydrated skin.


Herbology
The study of herbs and plants that aid in curing illnesses and preventing disease. Although herbs may prevent or correct many medical conditions, they are treated as a food and/or food supplement, rather than as a medication.


Hot Stone Massage
Hot stone massage uses smooth, heated stones as an extension to the therapist’s hands to massage the body and calm the mind. The stones used are often basalt, a black volcanic rock that absorbs and retains heat well. It is a deeply soothing, relaxing form of massage that aids in the release of muscle tension through the application of heat.


Immersion
A warm soothing bath in a uniquely designed tub with a moat that allows for complete immersion to allow the guest to completely relax and absorb the minerals or oils that are used for the specific treatment.

Lymphatic Drainage
Applied strokes intended to stimulate the movement of the lymphatic fluids in order to assist the body in cleansing. This gentle movement helps cleanse inflammatory materials and toxins, enhance the immune system, reduce pain, and calm the nervous system.


Massage
A treatment and practice of engaging active manipulation of soft body tissues with physical, functional, and therapeutic purposes and goals.


Meditation
Meditation involves focusing the mind upon a sound, phrase, prayer, object, visualized image, the breath, ritualized movements, or consciousness in order to increase awareness of the present moment, promote relaxation, reduce stress, and enhance personal or spiritual growth.


Microcurrent
A weak electrical current delivered on the same scale as the current the body produces on its own in each cell. Applying this current to the skin improves blood circulation, speeds healing of the tissue, aids in the reduction of acne, and improves skin tone.


Microdermabrasion
A procedure that diminishes lines and stimulates collagen growth by removing the rough outer layer of dead cells. The technician uses a hand held buffing wheel and a special abrasive cream to remove the surface layer of the skin.


Milk Thistle
Milk thistle is a plant that is native to the Mediterranean region.


Organic
Organic farming uses the earth’s natural resources for sustainability. It emphasizes appropriate land management and aims to ecologically achieve the balance between animal life, the natural environment and food crops. Organic farmers do not use pesticides, herbicides, genetically modified foods, growth promoters or hormones.


Organic Matter
Any material that was recently living or produced by a living organism and is capable of decomposing.

Paraben-Free
Used to describe products that do not contain parabens. Parabens are chemical preservatives added to personal-care products for extending shelf life, and widely used in many types of cosmetic products today. They are suspected of presenting risks to the reproductive system. The four main parabens in use are methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl parabens.

A bioactive plant substance considered to have beneficial affect on human health.

Yoga
Yoga is an ancient art based on a harmonizing system of development for the body, mind, and spirit. It incorporates stretching, muscle toning through isometrics, and breathing techniques to enhance circulation of oxygen to the body and calm the mind.
